"Most windows users are happy to use the Windows GUI (Graphical User Interface) environment and almost never use the MS-DOS shell interface. The various changes undergone by the Macintosh operating systems provide a nice study in contrast. Historically, Mac OS has not provided a command-line interface, always requiring its users to interface with the operating system using its GUI. However, with the release of Mac OS X (which is in part implemented using a UNIX kernel), the operating system now provides both a Aqua interface and a command-line interface. "

Aqua is the graphical user interface (GUI) and visual theme of Apple's Mac OS operating system. It was originally based around the theme of water, with droplet-like components and a liberal use of reflection effects and translucency. Its goal is to "incorporate color, depth, translucence, and complex textures into a visually appealing interface" in Mac OS applications. At its introduction, Steve Jobs noted that "one of the design goals was when you saw it you wanted to lick it".
